While we are delighted to provide street parking for recreational vehicles and vans during the World Championship at Coolidge Park, we are currently experiencing a shortage of manpower to oversee this task this year. Our primary responsibilities lie within the field and competition management. Therefore, we are seeking a volunteer club or individual to take on the parking coordination responsibilities this year. I'm writing to share some sad news with you all. One of our sport's great performers, Bryan Lamky, passed away at the age of 61 on March 26, 2025. Bryan along with his talented Doberman mix, Tatiana, competed in seven World Championships in the 1990s. They were an incredible duo, and their performances were always entertaining and fun to watch. I wanted to share a photo that I think perfectly captures Bryan and Tatiana's unique dance style and athleticism. It is similar to the one published in Skyhoundz Images, and it's a testament to their incredible talent. Bryan's passing is a huge loss for all of us who knew him and loved watching him perform. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and fans around the world. After judging around 300 rounds of competition at the end of yesterday's DiscDogathon, I was totally wiped out! But it was all worth it! Juan Manual and DiscMundog set up an amazing competition site and awards area. Since my first trip to Mexico to host a clinic and judge, the sport have grown so much - there were more competitors, more enthusiasm, and better teams. It's been so rewarding to see! I think we had around 60 teams in total, including Juan Carlos and Daniel, and their incredible dogs from Colombia. Many of you remember them from their appearances at the World Championship. Here's a quick rundown of the experience...to get to the competition fields, you had to drive through narrow city streets with speed bumps and pot holes, up a winding mountain road, turn into a property with a long dirt road, and then emerge into a sport complex with lots of green fields, plenty of parking, and a big building with bathrooms, a snack bar, and a barbecue. After parking, there was a short walk into a private area for our fields. There were even a few friendly "house" dogs that roamed around during setup and the event to welcome everyone. We only had to pause a Freestyle round once because one of the dogs meandered across the competition field. When we arrived, because we were on top of a mountain and it was morning, the temperature was chilly, but as the sun came out, it warmed up nicely, then the clouds moved in and it cooled down a bit, then we had a few bouts of light rain, most of which we were able to play through, until we couldn't. During that pause, we had a few minutes of light hail (see the photo), and finished in the dark when the temperatures dropped again. Overall, it was a great event, and as always, I loved spending time with the staff and competitors, seeing some amazing competition performances, and doing my part to help the sport grow. Thank you to Juan Manual (DiscMundog) for inviting me to teach a seminar for his club members this past weekend! Everyone there was so accommodating and interested in learning more about the sport. The fields were awesome, questions were outstanding, and everyone seemed to have a great time. And, another first for me, we all had to board a boat to get to and from the fields (Friday-Sunday)! It was quite the adventure with many dogs wanting to jump into the water. One did but her owner and I were able to wrangle her back into the boat. Oh, and what would dinner be like at the Mall without an earthquake!!! I looked up from our table and I saw everybody flooding out to the exit, later to find out we had to vacate because there was an earthquake! Everyone got up and went outside and then when the all clear sign was given everyone went back to their tables and finished dinner. Another day, another earthquake! Congratulations to Alex Stein and Ashley Whippet on the 50th anniversary of the Ashley Whippet Invitational! This event was the first series of disc dog competitions. I know many of today's disc dog competitors are new to the sport, but I had the chance to meet Alex when Ashley was at his peak. He was an extraordinary athlete—something you had to see in person to truly appreciate. Photos and videos don't capture his skill. There were moments when it seemed like he would miss the catch, only for him to surprise everyone and make an incredible grab. I feel privileged to have watched him perform live and to have thrown to him in various stadium shows. Thanks to their contributions, the sport has gained immense popularity and led to the formation of other organizations like Skyhoundz, UFO, USDDN, and UpDog. Congratulations to Caitlyn Olvitt and GIR, who Q'd at the LCQ yesterday with a catch of 137.4', today set the MicroDog Women's World Record with a catch of 198'. Awesome LCQs today but the day's highlight was Andrew Han's connection to Hype of 319.5' in Classic Plastic with an orange MaxQ Competition Standard disc. Reminder for those who are planning on setting up their tents at Camp Jordan on Sunday: "Camp Jordan competitor tent set-up: This year (2024), an AKC dog racing event will take place the weekend before our event, concluding by 3 pm on Sunday. Consequently, the field setup on Sunday will be delayed (probably until 4 pm at the earliest), and competitors may only set up their tents after MAD Dogs' completes its activities and clears the competitor tent setup area. "After field set-up has been completed competitors will be allowed to set up their tents in authorized areas. Competitors will be able to set their tents up only after Skyhoundz officials Ray Lowman or Frank Montgomery give the OK to do so.
